More Road Building Means More Need for Driver Caution

On just the 68th day of this year, Lee County recorded its 25th traffic fatality – this one also causing an injury to a roadside construction worker, while taking the life of a 58- year-old Michigan woman.

On March 2nd, the woman was traveling through a highway construction zone on I-75 when she crashed into a pavement roller machine working alongside the roadway. The FHP reports that the driver apparently left the roadway and lost control of her vehicle, crashing into the rear of the roller, which was moving slowly at the time of the collision. The crash sent Labelle resident and construction worker Concepcion Santamaria to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Construction accidents occur all too often in Southwest Florida, according to Fort Myers personal injury attorney Raymond L. Racila, of Goldberg, Racila, D'Alessandro & Noone, LLC. “With the abundance of road construction projects in the Fort Myers area, coupled with the influx of seasonal drivers on the road, it doesn't take long to see why highway construction accidents involving a motor vehicle are such a problem here”, Racila states.

In fact, Mr. Santamaria was at least the third employee of one local road paving firm to be injured while working alongside a Lee County road. In 2009, two other workers for the same firm were hit in two separate accidents, on the same project – the widening of I-75 from SR-78 to the Charlotte County line. The huge project is expected to be completed in mid-2014.

Personal injury lawyer Racila cautions all drivers to use extra care when driving through highway construction zones, especially those on high-speed thoroughfares like Interstate expressways. “When you see the first signs indicating you are coming up on a road construction zone, ease off the gas pedal, give yourself more car lengths between you and the car in front of you, and watch for construction vehicles entering the roadway”.
