The Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, which means the summer season is about to arrive. Who doesn't love the sights and smells of beach weather, and of course, the hot concert and event season?

While most of us are being careful and safe out there trying to enjoy ourselves, unfortunately, injuries will still occur.  In a lot of cases, people suffer an injury because of the carelessness or negligence of another person or persons. Whether you are at a festival, concert, wedding, or just enjoying a day out and about, hazards are all around and it is up to us to remain vigilant.  Its also important to know who to call in case you do get injured.

Concerts & Festivals: Turn it up!

We are all aware that when you place a large number of people together, things can escalate rather quickly.  Live electrical wires and cables, cable protectors, unruly attendees, pyrotechnics, and over-crowding to name a few, are all causes for injuries.  Unfortunately, too many have fallen, been suffocated, or even killed due to these associated risks of attending a concert or other large festival. Southwest Florida is home to so many events like food, art and music festivals and other outdoor gatherings that make our area unique.

But the key is to remain safe while having a good time, and use common sense. If a set of stairs or a hand rail looks unsafe, it probably is. Learn to keep your eyes open for any potential scenarios that could cause you a serious injury.

Weddings: Contracts, Decisions, and Guests, Oh My!

When you think about weddings, most people think romance, glitter, dancing, love, and food.  Yet few people realize how quickly a beautiful event can turn ugly.  Further, you may have unknowingly assumed someone else's responsibility for damages, placing yourself at risk for claims and legal woes.  For example, over-serving of alcohol, and slip or trip and falls on the dance floor are all possibilities during such a fun gathering. You should always pay special attention to reviewing any agreement between yourself and the venue where the wedding is being held to see what it says about guest security, safety and well-being, as well as any responsibilities and liability.

If one of your wedding guests is attacked in the parking lot leaving the reception, was the venue responsible for having adequate lighting or security personnel on site? No one wants the event of their lifetime to be ruined by an unfortunate incident that results in a serious injury.

So – What Do You Do if You've Been Hurt?

If you are injured at an event, whether you know the host(s), or not, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones.  First thing first, be aware of your surroundings.  Take note of the exits, as well as any open water (lakes, ponds, pools), tripping hazards (cables and/or cable protectors) and slipping hazards like a wet floor or uneven steps.  Secondly, locate the emergency personnel area, so you know where to get immediate treatment.

Lastly, be sure you or someone you trust remains hydrated, and alcohol-free; in case of any emergency, it is always a good idea to have a sober person on hand to help sort out the details and communicate with first responders.

If you do get injured, make sure to take photos documenting the location of your injury, as well as the hazard that caused your injury, and photos of the injury itself.  Get treatment as soon as possible, whether that is at the venues' emergency facilities, or the ER – that's the first priority after suffering an injury.
