Roll of the Dice: Driving is a Big Gamble

Driving is a gamble Driving is a gamble

If you're a gambler, you know the risks you take every time you sit down at the poker table or pull the handle of a slot machine. You understand that there's a chance you'll walk away a winner, but also the risk that you'll lose. When you roll the dice, you understand there's a chance your luck could go either way.

Today, that's the same scenario you'll face every time you get behind the wheel of your car or hop on your bike for a ride.

But really, your risk of being involved in some type of accident in Fort Myers isn't based on luck. It's based on the odds of some other driver who makes a mistake, and you end up being the victim. Calling a crash an ‘accident' is really not correct. There are multiple studies that point to driver error as the leading cause of serious automobile crashes – some report as high as 97%. Is it really an ‘accident' when a driver is looking at their phone when they blow through a stop sign and t-bone your car? Is it an ‘accident' when some aggressive speeder changes lanes abruptly and causes you to crash your vehicle?

No. Plain and simple, it's one driver who made a stupid, careless or negligent action that resulted in your car being totaled, and left you with serious injuries.

Driving now is just one big roll of the dice.

There's a reason people hang good-luck charms or religious symbols on their car's mirror – it's to provide a feeling of security to believe that your guardian angels will watch over you while you're on the road. Let's face it – you don't leave your house thinking you're going to be hit by someone. But the more you read the headlines these days about so many car, motorcycle, large truck or pedestrian crashes, the more you see the real risks of being on the road.

You become more alarmed when you read the stories behind the crashes. More and more, the actions, (or inactions), of drivers who cause crashes are so bizarre, it's hard to imagine how they happen. Seeing photos in the media of horrific crash scenes with cars turned upside down or split in half by some obstruction just makes you wonder how the heck you make it home alive every day.

Alcohol does play a factor in a high number of serious crashes in Southwest Florida. But there is a large percentage of collisions involving serious bodily injury that are the result of poor driving decisions. Racing through an intersection to beat the red light, stopping or turning abruptly without checking for cars around you, aggressive tailgating – all of these fall under the category of human error, and represent the overwhelming majority of crash causes.

Driving is a Risk, But You Do Have Options

Staying off the road or driving less is an option that will reduce your risk of being in a crash, of course. But for most people that's not a realistic option – you and your family need to be places that require driving around. As we said, when you pull out of your driveway in the morning, you have no idea what type of careless or just plain stupid driver you may encounter.

But if you ARE hurt in some type of motor vehicle crash, we want you to know that's what we're here for.

People who have never been victimized by being seriously hurt in a bad crash often don't understand the purpose or function of hiring a personal injury law firm like Goldberg Noone Abraham. There are people who can't imagine hiring an attorney to help them sort things out after a crash – and it's generally because they've never been in one.

After you've been hurt in a crash, you'll likely have so many questions, especially if you were not at fault. Your world is upside down, you've got serious medical issues and the bills that come with them, and you have no idea how you're going to be made physically and financially whole again.

You or the family breadwinner could be put out of work because of the accident, and you'll be wondering how to pay your bills. There'll be a lot of doctor visits and other medical appointments to try to heal your injuries, and your car may be undrivable as the result of a crash.

We help people who have suffered losses because of the carelessness or negligence of someone else.

Rolling the dice each time you get behind the wheel or throw your leg over your bike is a gamble you have to take in order to make a living, go to school or just get groceries. And there's no way to know if you'll come home a winner, or lose the gamble because of someone else's bad mistake.

We just want you to know that in the event of an unfortunate event like a car crash, we're always available to speak with you about your options. Frankly, not every crash requires the services of a personal injury law firm. And we are always up front with people who call us with questions after being involved in a crash.
