Where Do Most Car Accidents Occur?

Anyone who is dependent on their vehicle may already know that car accidents are common and, in some cases, unavoidable. Getting regular inspections, making equipment repairs, and following traffic laws are all good ways of reducing the risk of an accident; however, when another driver is acting negligently, there may be no way of avoiding a collision. These collisions occur most commonly these 3 general areas:

1. Collisions Close to Home

Drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident very close to home -- sometimes even right in front of the house. According to one survey from Progressive Insurance, approximately half of all car crashes occur within 5 miles of a driver's house.

It's common for crashes to happen when pulling in or out of a driveway, and side-swiping is also common on streets where residents park on the side of the road. These accidents can be relatively minor, but could still result in property damage and injury. If so, it may be wise to consider the guidance of an experienced DC personal injury lawyer to help receive the damage compensation you deserve.

2. Parking Lots

Parking lots are also very common locations for accidents. A parking lot doesn't necessarily have to involve tight spaces in order to increase the risk of collisions. When drivers are trying to watch for pedestrians and other vehicles in all directions, it's easy to make a mistake. Parking lot collisions often occur when two cars back out of their respective places at the same time, or when two vehicles attempt to pull through the same spot in opposite directions. When a parking lot is too small, larger vehicles may have trouble maneuvering around tight corners and could accidentally swipe the side of another person's vehicle.

Many newer vehicles have been developed with additional safety features, such as rear-facing cameras, to give drivers a better chance at avoiding these kinds of collisions. Nevertheless, parking lot accidents are still very common.

3. Busy Streets During Rush Hour

Finally, many car accidents occur on crowded city streets or highways during morning and evening rush hour traffic. When drivers are hurrying to get to work in the morning, or when they are impatient to get home after a long day at the office, people are more likely to make sudden driving maneuvers or display “road rage” while driving.

Regardless of location, accidents are very common when traffic is in a city street gridlock or is moving at a very slow, stop-and-go speed on the highway. Many drivers have caused rear-end collisions because they are focusing on other things: putting on makeup, eating breakfast, and talking on the phone are all common types of distracted driving in these situations.

Car accidents happen every single day and many of these accidents are small mistakes. However, even a minor fender bender can cause serious injuries and property damage. It's important for drivers to know that if they are involved in a serious car accident -- regardless of time or location -- a personal injury lawyer is just a phone call away.
