Vehicle Safety Recall: Hyundai, Kia Announce Large Defect Recalls

Citing a potential safety concern over defective parts that may present the risk of a car crash, Hyundai and Kia announced a massive vehicle recall on April 3, 2013.

The two automakers are owned by the same corporate parent, and use some of the same parts in each of their car models.

This most recent recall covers about 1.7 million vehicles – almost all of both manufacturers' 2007 through 2011 models, which used the same potentially defective brake light switch that could fail, causing four different safety hazards.

The one switch may result in the car's brake lights not going on, the cruise control may not disengage when the brake pedal is pressed, push-to-start buttons may not work and the feature that prevents the driver from shifting out of park without their foot being on the brake pedal may fail.

The National Highway Safety Administration stated on their website that issues with the brake light illumination and the cruise control problem could lead to a serious auto accident. The agency did not report any incidents to date.

In a separate recall, Hyundai is recalling almost 200,000 of their 2011-2013 Elantra models to correct a bracket on the airbag mechanism, which could come loose and cause an injury if the airbag is deployed. There has been at least one reported incident of the side airbag inflating in a crash and slicing the ear of the driver.

If you own one of the vehicles being recalled, company officials will be notifying you to bring your car into a dealership for corrective measures via a letter within the 2nd quarter of this year.
