New Year’s Eve 2013: Will You Make it ‘til Midnight?

Posted by Scot D. Goldberg | Dec 26, 2013 | 0 Comments

Hard to believe that yet another year has come and gone. And with the passing of one more lap around the sun, we find ourselves thinking back about our accomplishments, relationships and goals for a new year.

Hopefully, you'll find yourself in a good place in your life, happy and content with your achievements, and looking forward to more of the same. Maybe, you've been reflecting on what specific things you may do differently in 2014, and have resolved to make improvements to your life next year. In either case, it mostly comes down to the decisions we all face in life, and how we react to each individual situation that determines our future, good or bad.

When it comes to the stroke of midnight on December 31st, do you know where'll you be? It's interesting to ask people about their New Year's Eve plans, if only because of the range of answers you'll get. Some people have traditions that last for years, and always have a plan, like going to a family member's house party – because that's what they've always done. Others make plans to dress up and go out to a lavish gala for the night, complete with a buffet dinner, the obligatory champagne toast at midnight and an offer of a reduced hotel room rate along with the package.

Then there's a whole other group whose tradition is to do nothing at all, or as close to it as possible. Maybe they prepare the same meal every year, snuggle up in front of the tube and toast with diet soda at 10:00 pm, then call it a night.

Whatever your plans may be for ringing in the New Year, we hope you think about making it past midnight and into 2014 in one piece. There are those who say that they'll never go out on the road on New Year's Eve, because ‘that's when all the crazies are out'. And in fact, they are correct. According to recent estimates from the National Safety Council, the New Year's holiday period – 6:00 p.m. December 31 through 11:59 January 1 – will result in 156 traffic fatalities and 16,700 medically consulted injuries this year. That time period is ranked #4 in the annual Holiday list of the most traffic deaths on our nation's roads – but #1 when it comes to the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired traffic deaths.
