It's often a sea of bright yellow on Southwest Florida roads during the school year, with so many public and private school buses carrying our kids to and from school.

Unfortunately, all too frequently we see news reports of horrific school bus accidents in Lee, Charlotte and Collier Counties, and many more throughout the state and the entire U.S. Just in late September in Florida's Putnam County, a Seminole County school bus carrying middle school kids rolled over after swerving to avoid a collision, resulting in a dozen serious crash injuries.

And in Sanford in late August, two young school girls lost their lives in a tragic collision between their school bus and another vehicle.

National School Bus Safety Week is this week, October 21st thru October 25th.
800 students die annually on their way to or from school, according to the National Research Council and the National Academy of Sciences. But, you may be surprised to learn that school bus accident fatalities account for a very low percentage of the total deaths. The nationwide safety record notes there are about 25 million children in the U.S. who rely on a school bus for getting to and from school daily, and another 25 million who get there either in a passenger car, on foot or on a bicycle.

Our commutes to work and back, plus seasonal traffic and thousands of commercial vehicles in Southwest Florida mean many cars and trucks are jockeying for position together with the school buses on local roads. The school bus accident injury attorneys at Goldberg, Racila, D'Alessandro & Noone remind us all of some important stats.

The nationwide safety record notes there are about 25 million children in the U.S. who rely on a school bus for getting to and from school daily, and another 25 million who get there either in a passenger car, on foot or on a bicycle. Of the 800 reported fatalities involving students annually:

  • 448 deaths were in passenger cars with a teenage driver
  • 169 deaths were in passenger cars with an adult driver
  • 131 deaths involved pedestrians
  • 46 deaths involved bicyclists
  • Only 5 deaths involved school bus passengers
  • Only 15 deaths involved pedestrians at school bus stops

According to stats from the National Highway Traffic Safety Council, there were 1,236 fatal school transportation crashes from 2001 to 2010, which resulted in 1,368 deaths. The NHTSA numbers also show a low number of deaths involving kids on a bus at just 7 percent, while 72 percent were passengers or drivers of other vehicles.

A look at the numbers shows our kids are pretty safe, overall, when taking the bus to school and back. But our local roads here won't get any less crowded, so we are best reminded to use a little extra care and pay a little more attention to the road when we see that bright yellow bus. The safety of all of our kids may depend on it.
