Hit-and-Run Car Crashes the Focus of FHP Efforts

Leaving the scene may cost dearly

The latest educational traffic safety efforts undertaken by The Florida Highway Patrol focus on the increasing number of hit-and-run motor vehicle accidents in the Sunshine State. FHP is calling their campaign Hit & Run – Bad 2 Worse, intimating that while being involved as the driver who caused a serious car crash, leaving the scene of the accident can make things dramatically worse.

According to FHP Director, Col. David Brierton, “hit-and-run crashes are a growing problem in Florida. We hope the educational awareness campaign and our partnerships with Florida law enforcement agencies and FDOT will help us meet our mission goals of traffic safety”.

Our motor vehicle accident lawyers at Goldberg, Racila, D'Alessandro & Noone are extremely familiar with the devastating effects of a hit-and-run crash. The trauma of sustaining a serious injury can seem even more tragic when the at-fault driver cannot be located. Our team of dedicated trial lawyers have a thorough and complete understanding of Florida motor vehicle laws relating to culpability and negligence of the at-fault driver, and can aggressively fight to make your life whole again after a serious crash.

Fort Myers personal injury lawyer Scot D. Goldberg notes there are many reasons why a driver may leave the scene after causing an accident. “The driver may have an outstanding warrant for his or her arrest, may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or may not have a driver's license or automobile insurance”, says Goldberg. “People in those circumstances tend to panic, and think they can get away with running from an accident in which they may have caused serious permanent injury or even death”.

According to FHP statistics, there were 69,994 hit-and-run crashes in Florida in 2012. Sadly, the number of deaths caused by those accidents went up from 162 in 2011 to 168 in 2012. 3 out of every 5 fatalities last year were pedestrians struck by a hit-and-run vehicle.
