Fatal Dog Mauling: 7-Year-Old Panhandle Boy Dies

Posted by Scot D. Goldberg | Apr 07, 2013 | 0 Comments

Tyler Jett, a young boy from the Florida panhandle city of Callaway, died on Sunday, April 7th, 2013, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The boy had been viciously attacked by 2 bulldogs on April 2nd.

The owner of the dogs, Edward Daniels II, has been charged with felony counts of tampering with evidence, after investigators say he washed blood off of the paws and face of the dogs immediately following the brutal incident. Based on the proximity of Daniels' home to that of the Jett family, as well as the desperate actions of people on the street to chase the dogs away, investigators believe Daniels had knowledge that the attack involved a person, and not another animal, as Daniels had stated.

The dog owner remains in the Bay County Jail. Police have also charged Daniels with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

This is just one of many dog bite injuries that have resulted in death. According to the Centers for Disease Control, dog bite injuries happen every 75 seconds in the U.S., with over 1,000 people per day requiring emergency medical care caused by a dog attack.

There are those who feel it is typically one or two specific breeds of dogs that are responsible for attacks on humans, and the statistics support their theory. According to information found on DogBites.org, in the 8-year period from 2005 to 2012, two dog breeds accounted for 73% of the attacks that resulted in death: Pit Bulls and Rottweiler's.

In an effort to curb attacks by these and other dog breeds that are known as “fighting dogs”, over 600 U.S. cities have adopted breed-specific laws since the mid 1980s, just after pit bulls (fighting dogs) began leaking into the general population.

Fort Myers dog bite injury attorney Michael Noone of Goldberg, Racila, D'Alessandro & Noone, LLC, represents individuals and their families who have been victimized by a dog attack. “Kids are naturally inquisitive, and they don't know that some breeds of dogs may be more prone to attack than others,” said Noone. “This is a terrible reminder of just how dangerous allowing children near some specific breeds of dogs can be – you just never know what may happen”.
