Dog Bite Injuries Happen Too Often: May 19-25 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week

As a Naples couple mourns the death of their beloved dog, Woodstock, who was attacked and killed by another dog, we are all reminded that May 19th – 25th is National Dog Bite Awareness Week.

The Chihuahua Shitzu mix was just adopted by the couple a few months ago, and was mauled to death by an unknown dog that sprung from the bushes while Woodstock was being taken for his daily walk. The mixed breed dog with short brown hair was not believed to be a stray – it was last seen jumping into a red vehicle driven by a blonde female. The couple's neighbors and local law enforcement officials are making every attempt to locate the owner of this dangerous animal.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week was established by the U.S. Postal Service, an organization who not surprisingly has a serious interest in preventing dog bite injuries. Other organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association and the National Humane Society all work with the USPS on this public service campaign, designed to bring attention to this serious issue. In Florida, traumatic dog bite injuries are increasing. According to the Lee County Animal Services Division, there are more than 1,000 reported animal bite incidents in Lee County annually, and about 75% of them involve dogs.

The number of dog bite injuries has tripled in Lee County between 2000 and 2010, so the need for more public awareness seems obvious. “The emphasis of this year's PSAs is that any dog is capable of biting – it's not just stray pit bulls”, said Fort Myers dog bite injury attorney Scot D. Goldberg. “There is a big need for all of us to learn how to prevent a dog from biting, especially if you have young children and a dog in your home”.

Young children are the most likely to be bitten by a dog, according to AVMA. Here are some other related facts you may not know:

  • Each year, more than 4.5 million people in the U.S. are bitten by dogs.
  • Almost 1 in 5 people bitten by dogs require medical attention.
  • Every year, more than 800,000 Americans receive medical attention for dog bites; at least half of them are children.
  • Most dog bites affecting young children occur during everyday activities and while interacting with familiar dogs.
  • Senior citizens are the second most common dog bite victims.
