We post a lot of information here about texting while behind the wheel, and just how dangerous that can be. But the truth is, there are many ways to become distracted while behind the wheel – all of which can lead to causing a serious car crash resulting in a severe personal injury.

There are many details related to distracted driving that you may not know. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the National Safety Council is promoting a very thorough campaign meant to get your attention. Here are some highlights:

  • Texting is not the only distraction caused by your phone – even talking can take your brain off the road
  • Cognitive brain distraction is a major cause of traffic accidents – your mind just can't take in everything it needs to keep you focused on the road
  • Think using a hands-free device helps you pay attention to the road? Think again – studies show that simply trying to carry on a conversation while on any type of phone device will cause you to become distracted.
  • Distracted drivers actually have slower reaction times as compared to a driver whose blood alcohol level is at the current legal limit of 0.08%.
  • Teens and younger drivers are not the only ones using their phones while driving. Studies have shown drivers over the age of 30 are just as guilty of this careless behavior.

As personal injury attorneys, we help people who have been injured as a result of a crash caused by someone else's negligence or carelessness. Stop and think for a minute – have there been times when you have experienced a near-miss traffic crash because you were using your phone while driving?

There is a simple solution to reducing the number of distracted driving accidents – just make the conscious decision to stay off the phone while you're in your car. Easy as that. For more details on distracted driving, click here.
