Dangerous Tire Blow-Outs: Nissan Recalls Altimas For Spare Tire Problems

Nissan will be announcing the recall of about 123,000 Altima models because of a potentially hazardous spare tire, which could explode for no apparent reason – even when it's sitting in the trunk.

The recall will affect 2013 year models which were produced from March 2012 to March 2013. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the problem is caused by an over-inflated spare tire. The tires – supplied by a company called Maxxis – were apparently inflated with a faulty inflation gauge on a machine in Nissan's Canton, Mississippi, manufacturing plant.

The faulty gauge would either under or over-inflate the spare tires. There have been incidents reported in which over-inflated tires would explode in the trunk due to the heat.

Nissan will send letters to the affected vehicle owners, requesting they bring the cars back to the dealership to have their spare tires inspected for proper inflation.

“Tire blow-outs can cause a serious car crash,” says Fort Myers personal injury lawyer Scot D. Goldberg, of Goldberg, Racila, D'Alessandro & Noone, LLC. “If you get one of the recall letters from Nissan, don't ignore it – proper tire inflation is one of the easiest ways to ensure your car is safe to drive”.
